US Women Volleyball tryouts slated for second week of February 2012
The open tryouts for different women’s national volleyball teams in USA are scheduled to take place from February 10 to 12.
The well-equipped and fully facilitated Sports Centre II at the U.S. Olympic Training Centre in Colorado Springs, Colorado, will hold the three-day event. At the end of try-outs, the rosters of following three teams will be finalised:

U.S. Women’s National Team U.S. Women’s National A2 programme U.S. Women’s Junior National Team
The open-tryouts are annually held, where aspiring athletes from different colleges get together and go through the evaluation process. The upcoming tryouts are open to current college-age athletes and older. The try-outs are extremely important as they
create the opportunity for team selectors to pick out the best athletes from the pool of talented players.
Speaking about the try-outs, the Head Coach of U.S. Women’s National Volleyball Team Hugh McCutcheon opined that it gives them a unique opportunity to coach and evaluate the players. Furthermore, the evaluation process allows them to identify the skilful
athletes and to integrate them into the teams.
The 2012 U.S. women’s volleyball open try-out will be attended by 208 athletes, who have registered their names so far. The participants of the try-outs will represent 69 different colleges. The number of registered athletes is comparatively higher than
the previous years.
In 2011, a total of 204 athletes participated in the open try-outs.
The grid of 208 tryout participants this year is composed of 54 outside hitters, 52 middle blockers, 36 setters, 43 liberos, and 23 opposites.
The USAV has selection criteria for all three mentioned categories. The athletes, who have completed their college eligibility and wish to join the U.S. Women’s National Volleyball Squad on a full-time basis, are allowed to participate in the open try-outs
for national team. This program is likely to start in the spring of 2012. The selected candidates will train with the U.S. Women’s National Team.
The students, who will not be able to find a place on the roster of national team, will be invited to attend the try-outs for Women’s Senior A2 programme. This program is set to take place in Columbus, Ohio, from June 26 through July 5, where projected 48
athletes will be on board. Likewise, the junior team selected through try-outs, will play at the USA Volleyball Girls’ Junior National Championships (GJNC) in July.
The USAV is hopeful that the open try-outs will help them in choosing the most deserving athletes for the national and junior teams and also for Senior A2 programme.
