US Women seal bronze medal victory in Women’s Sabre Team contest of Catania Championships
On the second last day of the 2011 Catania World Fencing Championships, the Unites States Sabre squad ended the day after sealing the bronze medal victory in the Women’s Sabre Team contest.
The Olympic Champion, Zagunis commented on the bronze medal victory and said, “This entire season I think we’ve had a great team dynamic and I’m glad that it all came together at Worlds and we were able to get a medal this year. I think we fenced really
well and, even though we wanted to win gold, third place is still a medal and it’s still good to win.”
Men’s Epee Team and Women’s Sabre contest were concluded on October 15. The US squad including the two-time Olympic Champion, Mariel Zagunis, Ibtihaj Muhammad, Dagmara Wozniak and Daria Schneider earned the automatic bye in the Pre-Elimination round. The
super squad overcame the Tunisian fencers after scoring 45 touches with a loss of 35 touches overall. Advancing to the quarter-final bout, US Women faced the Italian squad led by Irene Vecchi who is among the top fencers of the Blues. The bout between Italy
and US tied at 41-41 and then 43-43 touches. The tie was broken by Zagunis who secured the victory for US after hitting the final 45th hit.
US faced the Russian Women in the semi-final bout after eliminating Italy. The Team USA lost their semi-final bout to Russia with the score-line of 33-45 touches in the competition. Wozniak stated that she was proud of her team-mates because she felt that
they pulled together all day, including during the bout against Russia. The gold medal was captured by the team from Russia who defeated Ukraine in the playoff.
The bronze medal fight of USA squad was set with Azerbaijan Women who were also eliminated in the semi-final by the Ukrainian squad. The bout was captured by USA with the score of 45-40 after a strong bout. The Blue squad ended their Sabre Team event on
the seventh spot in the competition.
