US Women’s Open 2012: Ai Miyazato ties for fourth in first round
Japanese Ai Miyazato registered a solid 70 in the opening round of the US Women’s Open 2012, sharing the fourth spot on the leaderboard along with Jennie Lee, Beatriz Recari and Lexi Thompson.
Miyazato appeared to be completely pumped up on the opening day of the prestigious event, being held at Kohler, as she stepped up pressure on top-ranked players in the roster.
Other players who grabbed attention on the first day of the US Women’s Open are Americans Brittany Lincicome, Lizette Salas and Cristie Kerr, as they shared the lead after shooting a 69 each.
Miyazato is being regarded as the hot favourite contender for the major title, as she has been playing amazingly well in the current season. She has won two LPGA titles so far in the year, and is seeking to add more shine to her already-stunning profile.
The Japanese star amazed her fans when she grabbed a title at the LPGA Lotte Championship in April this year. Her desire to win did not end there, as she racked up yet another LPGA title at the Walmart NW Arkansas Championship 2012.
The 27-year-old golfer is seeking to further improve her game, and a major event seems to be the best opportunity for that. Getting off to solid start in the star-studded battle has certainly boosted her confidence and she is ready to ramp up pressure on
her rivals in the next three rounds.
Speaking to the media about her stunning start to the tournament, Miyazato said that she could not believe that she displayed such a good performance. She said that she could have further consolidated her position on the leaderboard, but due to miscalculation,
she could not judge the ball properly on some holes.
“I'm very happy with my round today. It was really tough out there because of the heat. And you know, the golf course is always tough conditions at the U.S. Women's Open,” the LPGA titan said.
“It wasn't easy, but I had an ice bag in my bag, so I used that a lot, especially last five holes, and I had a sun umbrella and trying to drink lots of water and take some vitamins and just trying to get used to it, but it wasn't really easy out there”.
