US Women’s Open 2012: Brittany Lincicome stands strong after sharing lead in first round
American Brittany Lincicome registered an impressive 69 in the first round of the US Women’s Open 2012, sharing a lead with two other players.
Lincicome looked completely fired up on the first day of the major tournament, being played at Kohler, as she made it hard for most of the big names to surge past her.
Other contenders who shared a lead with Lincicome are Cristie Kerr and Lizette Salas from the United States. Kerr and Salas both posted a 69 each on the leaderboard.
Lincicome, who is seeking to record a victory at the US Women’s Open, won her first major title at the Kraft Nabisco Championship in 2009. Although she has appeared at the Open before, she has never come close
to clinching a title.
However, in the 2009 US Open, Lincicome finished 5th
— something analysts said gave her plenty of confidence.
The ongoing edition of the prestigious event is, as usual, is featuring a strong roster that contains contenders like So Yeon Ryu, who is defending her title, and current world number one Yani Tseng.
Lincicome is making all-out efforts to improve her game, as she has showed in the past that she can give a tough time to top-ranked players.
Speaking to the media about her first-round performance, the American prodigy said that she is glad that she has been able to seize the lead along with two other fellow Americans.
She pointed out that due to good training she had on the practice range recently, she was able to post a solid score in the opening round.
“I was very pleased. Coming into this week and playing the practice rounds, you're out there and you're like, oh, my gosh, 5, 6, 7‑over is going to win this event,” Lincicome said.
“Obviously today shooting 3‑under I have to kind of rethink my strategy, and obviously under par is very doable. If you can keep it in the fairway, hit it in the right spot on the green and I made a couple
long putts today which was nice”.
Speaking of the tough weather conditions on the course, the first-round leader said that she was a little troubled due to sweltering heat. However, she added that she played carefully on almost every hole.
“It was a bad combination. I felt like we were out there waiting on every single hole”.
