US Women’s Open 2012: Lexi Thompson messes up in the final round
American Lexi Thompson, who got off to a decent start at the US Women’s Open 2012, fired a 78 in the final round to finish tied for the 14th position.
Thomson was more than happy after she made a stunning start in the major tournament, played at Blackwolf Run, Kohler, but her last-round performance took a toll on her overall position on the leaderboard.
The American star kicked off the final round in an unimpressive style, as she made a bogey on the first hole. Thompson had to face tough weather conditions, which made it hard for her to shoot perfect strokes.
She parred the second, third and fourth hole and recorded a bogey on the par-4 5th hole.
On the back nine, the rising golfer looked completely shattered, as she could not make calculated putts. She tried not to mess up the score by shooting the ball off its course, but she remained under pressure most of the time.
After posting a birdie on the 10th hole, she could not keep a control on her drives and swing. She shot a bogey on the 12th, and two double bogeys on the 13th and 14th hole.
Analysts said that Thompson could have piled up a big lead against her rivals, but her mistakes on the back nine of the last round made a dent in her overall score.
Regretting her performance in the final moments of the tournament, the LPGA giant said that she made some fatal mistakes on the back nine, which kept her from advancing.
She said that if she had avoided messing up her score on the 13th an 14th hole, she would have been in a much better position.
“I pretty much had two bad holes that got me in trouble with a double. Usually messes up your round. Other than that it was all right,” Thompson said.
Despite marring her scorecard in the last moments of the US Women’s Open 2012, the 17-year-old golfer was keen to point out that her pitting and ball striking remained amazingly well.
“I just had a few bad holes. Got me in trouble. But overall, I was really pleased with my ball striking, and my putting is a lot better,” she said.
