US Women’s Open 2012: Lexi Thompson off to a solid start in first round
American Lexi Thompson got off to a solid start in the first round of the US Women’s Open 2012, as she recorded a 70 to tie for the fourth spot with three other contenders.
Ai Miyazato, Beatriz Recari and Jennie Lee also posted a 70 each to tie for the fourth position, and put pressure on other contenders.
Thompson looked in a stunning from on the first day of the much-hyped major battle, being staged at Blackwolf Run, as she made strokes with precision.
The rising star has been trying to end her victory drought since the start of the 2012 season, however, the ongoing match can provide her with plenty of opportunities.
Although she is not among the favourite contenders for the tournament, her performance in the first round reflects that the professional golfer is firm to move ahead.
Speaking to the media about how she is going to face rivals in the next rounds, Thompson said that she recently adopted a completely different approach to playing against battle-hardened LPGA stars, and amazingly it works more often than not.
She said that she has worked hard on several aspects of the game, and she is experiencing good results. Speaking of the weather in the first round of the tournament, the young prodigy said she faced trouble adjusting to the hot conditions, as sweltering heat played havoc.
“It was extremely hot out there.  I had my umbrella pretty much the hole time and a cool towel around my neck.  So staying hydrated was really important,” Thompson said.
The golfing sensation displayed a solid performance overall, but she faltered on some holes. On the back nine, she shot two straight bogeys, which seemed to rattle her. However, she quickly regained her composure.
“Feeling good.  I'm going to relax the rest of the day.  I have a late tee time tomorrow.  I tee off at 2009 and going to relax after that and go out with the same attitude,” Thompson shared. “I feel really good about it.  I had two bogeys on the back nine.  So I got off track a little bit there, but I bounced back and made a few birdies”.
