US Women’s Open 2012: Lexi Thompson stands tied for 9th at the end of second round
American Lexi Thompson shot a 73 in the second round of the US Women’s Open 2012 and tied for the 9th position along with three other LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) contenders.
Thompson was brimming with confidence when she kicked off the second round, but made plenty of lapses that took a toll on her overall position.
The Florida native started the round in an impressive style, as she shot two back-to-back birdies on the first two holes. Draining early birdies helped her gain confidence, as other contenders already ramped up pressure by scoring well.
Thompson, however, faltered on the 3rd hole and ended up shooting a bogey. She parred the next holes and bogeyed the 9th hole. On the back nine, the LPGA giant looked a little shaken up as she recorded two double bogeys and three birdies.
Suzann Pettersen of Norway displayed a stellar performance and grabbed a second-round lead after posting a 68. On the other hand, American Michelle Wie improved her position, as she rose to share the second position after she scored an explosive 66.
Thompson spoke to the media at the end of the round and shared her thoughts about how she performed in a field featuring contenders like current world number one Yani Tseng, Paula Creamer, Stacy Lewis, Ai Miyazato, Cristie Kerr, Sandra Gal, Lizette Salas, Jessica Korda, Se Ri Pak and Spanish Azahara Munoz.
Thompson said that she was happy to find herself in a strong position, but the next rounds will require plenty of hard work good planning. She said that the second round was more difficult as compared to the first one, but she will try to atone for this mistake in the third round.
“Yeah, it was sort of an up‑and‑down day.  I had two doubles and a few bogeys, but I bounced back and made a few birdies.  But overall it was an all right day, but sort of a roller coaster,” the rising star said.
Mentioning a mess-up on the 18th hole where she made a double bogey, Thompson said that she could not judge her iron shot.  “I hit a good drive, and then I just pulled my iron shot.  I was aiming towards the middle of the green and just pulled it pretty bad.  Then didn't end up getting up and down, but I hit a good putt and made double”.
