US Women’s Open 2012: Michelle Wie performs well as she ties for second position
American Michelle Wie stunned her fans in the second round of the US Women’s Open 2012, as she tied for the second position after posting a 66.
Wie is sharing the position with fellow American Cristie Kerr who recorded a 71 to drop from the top spot.
The US Women’s Open 2012 is being played at the prestigious Blackwolf Run, Kohler, with most of the big names in the roster.
Key LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) contenders include defending champion So Yeon Ryu, current world number one Yani Tseng, Suzann Pettersen, Paula Creamer, Lexi Thompson, Stacy Lewis, Karrie Webb, Sandra Gal, Mika Miyazato, Ai Miyazato, Inbee Park, Jessica Korda, Lydia Ko and Azahara Munoz.
Despite a strong field, Wie appeared to have her full control on the club, as she made near-perfect shots on most of the holes.
The American prodigy kicked off the second day in an impressive style, as she drained a birdie on the very first hole. She, however, could not keep a grip on her nerve and ended up bogeying the second hole.
On the 4th hole, she cheered her fans again as she shot another birdie.
Analysts said that golfing sensation looked in a superb form, as she avoided making serious lapses. They said that she did falter on some holes, but was quick enough to atone for the mistakes.
On the back nine, Wie displayed a flawless performance. She drained four birdies, which helped her solidify her position on the leaderboard.
The weather conditions remained almost the same on Friday as the previous day, with sweltering heat rattling players. However, Wie kept her cool did not let the weather hurt her performance.
She spoke to the media and shared how she managed to improve her leaderboard position. The American golfer said that she is happy with her performance.
"I felt pretty good today. It was a really good confidence boost for the weekend. I'm just going to build on it," Wie said.
She went on to say that her putting was far better on Friday than it was on Thursday.
“I think that was the main difference from yesterday. Yesterday I had a lot of 40‑foot putts, 50‑foot putts. Today on the back 9 I had a lot of putts within 15 feet”.
