US Women’s Open 2012: Se Ri Pak proud of South Korean players
South Korean Se Ri Pak, who finished tied for the ninth position at the US Women’s Open 2012, said that she was happy to see the names of South Korean players atop the leaderboard at the major tournament.
Pak spoke to the media during the US Women’s Open 2012 held at Blackwolf Run, Kohler, and shared her feelings about how she coped with all the pressure at the most prestigious LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) events.
Asians, especially South Koreans, have emerged to prove their mettle on the LPGA Tour in recent years. South Korean golfers have dominated most of the positions in the top 100 in the Women’s World Golf Rankings, and they seem unstoppable.
Analysts said that having racked up yet another major title, South Korea has become the hotbed for talented players. They added that American players, who had ruled women’s golf for decades, have now been pushed back in rankings table.
However, some of the American golfers are making all-out efforts to rise to the top spots in the world rankings.
“Like last year a couple of Koreans went into playoff. Again, they play together last round. I'm really happy to see that. I'm very proud of both of them, no matter what happened. Of course they are coming to one of these champions,” Pak said.
The South Korean star went on to say that the best thing about these golfers is that they have plenty of time to keep moving ahead.
Pak won the US Women’s Open in 1998 at the same course, Blackwolf Run. She pointed out that after playing at the most important LPGA event, rising South Korean stars will gain so much.
“After this week they will have great experience and helping their future. So as I said, just really exciting to watch it, because back 14 years ago, of course, nobody here from my country, which feel like really alone, but now, I feel really good,” the major champion said.
Pak has been representing South Korea in professional golf since 1996, and has been able to record 25 victories on the LPGA Tour so far — a feat that has helped her eclipse the fame of most of the big names in women’s golf.
