US Women’s Open 2012: So Yeon Ryu says Se Ri Pak advised her to stay calm at major battle
South Korean So Yeon Ryu, who is defending her title at the US Women’s Open 2012, said that she is feeling proud after getting some advice from the Se Ri Pak, who won the 1998 edition of the major tournament.
Speaking to the media about her plans for the prestigious tournament scheduled to be held from July 5-8, at Blackwolf Run, Kohler, Ryu said that she is happy to have some big names by her side.
Mentioning her fellow South Korean Pak, Ryu said that the former major champion walked up to her and gave her some meaningful advices regarding how she can repeat her last-year performance.
She said that Pak advised her to stay calm on the course, because it is usually nerves that put a player in trouble.
The defending champion was keen to point out that the 1998 champ wants her to spend less time on the practice range, as it will help her hold her nerve.
“Actually, really interesting is she said don't take too much practice at the golf course, because sometimes too much information make you crazy,” the rising star said.
“And I totally understand it, because when I came here first time at media day, almost one month ago, the first time I played the course, I felt like not bad. But after that, the course feels like getting more tough and tough”.
The course, Blackwolf Run, is a little different from Broadmoor Golf Club where Ryu won her first major tournament. However, her stunning performance in the US Women’s Open 2011 will help her display a better game than most of her rivals.
The South Korean prodigy shared that she knows the course well, though she never won any event here. She went on to say that some holes, at Blackwolf Run, are tricky, while some are easy.
“The big thing is the 18th hole. Before the left side is just bunker. Now you guys filled it up, the water. So it feels like more afraid of it,” the 22-year-old golfer said.
When asked what she thinks of Pak’s victory at the same course back in 1998, Ryu said this is what is keeping her motivated because a player from her country made a name for herself.
