US Women’s Open: LPGA successfully pursues its goals, set to stage another big battle this week
The LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) Tour is grabbing the headlines these days, as it is going to stage one of its most prestigious tournaments, the US Women’s Open 2012, this week.
The Tour, which has been playing a pivotal role in expanding scope of women’s golf across the world, has ramped up its efforts to flourish golf outside the United States and Europe.
Tour officials said that this is not just the facilities and amenities the LPGA is offering to players and the spectators, fierce competition is also one of its salient features.
The roster for the impeding major tournament, as usual, is fearsome. Prominent players confirmed to participate in the event include the current world number one Yani Tseng, defending champion So Yeon Ryu,
Paula Creamer, Suzann Pettersen, Stacy Lewis, Morgan Pressel, Lexi Thompson, Si Ri Park, Azahara Munoz, Ai Miyazato and Cheyenne Woods.
The US Women’s Open has long been ruled by players from the United States, as they won most events. However, with plenty of non-American contenders having risen to the top spots in the Women’s World Golf Rankings
in recent years, American players are struggling to regain their lost glory.
South Korean Ryu is proud of herself, as she put her country’s name in the spotlight after clinching her first major title at the US Open in the 2011 season.
Dottie Pepper, a professional LPGA star who now works as an analyst for a golf channel, said that she is witnessing plenty of changes in women’s golf.
Pepper participated in the 1998 edition of the US Open, and seems to be heavily impressed by the rising stars from Asian countries.
The former golfer pointed out that there are players who are able to make a name for themselves in the looming battle at Kohler.
Pepper shared that she is going to keep a close eye on Chinese Shanshan Feng. Feng has emerged as the hottest star, as she won the LPGA Championship 2012, one of the major tournaments on the LPGA Tour.
“I don’t think anybody saw it coming, which makes me think people ought to pay attention to Shanshan Feng,” the former LPGA giant said.
