US beach volleyball star Misty May-Treanor to retire after the Olympics – Volleyball News
Two-time Olympic gold-medallist and top-seeded professional beach volleyball player from the USA, Misty May-Treanor, has announced to opt for retirement from the international beach volleyball following the completion of 2012 London Olympic Games. She disclosed the news during a phone interview on Tuesday.
In fact, she decided to retire from the international competitions last year, but it took her almost a year to finally break the news.
The 34-year US star has been attached to the challenging sport of beach volleyball for a long time. She started her career as a pro beach volleyball player in 1999 and shot to international fame on account of her wonderful skills. She received many accolades and settled for many honours during her career including the gold medals in 2004 Athens Olympics and 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. In the next run, she is also counting on a third gold medal at the 2012 London Olympics. May-Treanor will turn 35 during the London Olympic Games.
According to an estimation, May-Treanor has earned almost $2.1 million through her game in past 13 years. Besides, she also received various other endorsements.
Answering a question whether she will miss the international competitions after retirement, she said: "Honestly, I don't think so. I've made a lot of friends doing this. But a lot of those friends don't play anymore. The travel gets tiring. I'll miss some of the different people, and I'll miss some other parts. But I'm ready to move on."
May-Treanor has decided to say good-bye to international volleyball as she wants to give more time to her family. She told that she wants to spend more time with her husband and wants to have children. She has already booked a trip with her husband, Los Angeles Dodgers catcher Matt Treanor, to Las Vegas after the Olympics.
Hence, there are only seven weeks left in her retirement, which will probably happen in August. But before the retirement, May-Treanor and her partner, Kerri Walsh, have another challenge to prove their potential at this year’s Olympics. The Horse Guards Parade in London is waiting for some hot action of beach volleyball. Let’s wait and see if the American star takes away another gold medal at the Olympics.
