i'm going to australia and i was wondering if there's a cell phone provider in the US that will be able to get service in Australia?

  1. As long as it's a GSM provider, you should be able to roam in Australia with any provider so long as you have a Tri Band or Quad Band phone (must support GSM 900 and/or GSM 1800). Prices are likely to vary significantly between providers, so call them first.

    Another option is to get your existing GSM phone "unlocked" so you can use a pre-pay SIM from an Australian provider. This would be a cheaper option if you intend to make a lot of calls WITHIN Australia (rather than calling back to the US). Again, it would have to be a tri or quad band phone, but once unlocked you should be able to pick up a SIM pack from any phone dealer when you're over there.

    What you will definitely NOT be able to do is use a phone from a CDMA provider, such as Sprint or Verizon. The reason being, there are NO CDMA networks in Australia, so you would not be able to get a signal there even if your provider allows roaming.
