US citizen getting UK drivers license?

Question

The DVLA tells me to get a UK license as a US citizen residing in the UK, I must submit my original passport for 3 to 5 weeks while the application is processed. I am told by the DVLA this is the only way to apply. Has anyone found a way around this or found a way to expedite the process.

no I would presume this is the only way! It may not take that long when you send it though.

There is a piece of paper called the International driver permit. It will save the trouble for only ten dollars. It is recommend by the AAA for travelers aboard. Just click this link below.
