US coach Jurgen Klinsmann pleased with Sporting Lisbon's Oguchi Onyewu – Liga Sagres News
US national football team coach Jurgen Klinsmann has shown his pleasure at the form of Sporting Lisbon centre-back, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/United-States-c3034 squad and was quite happy that
Onyewu had made his return.
American International Onyewu signed for the Lions this summer after failing to impress coaches during his stint at AC Milan.
At San Siro, the centre-back was often farmed out to other sides to gain experience and was never fully considered to a player capable of playing for the Rossoneri. The Italian giants last sent him on a loan spell to http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/FC-Twente-c39233, where he had a rather modest
campaign.
After his time in the Netherlands, the 29-year-old chose to start a new career in the Portuguese Primeira Liga with Sporting and up until now the decision has paid off.
While he is most famous for netting a late winner against Rio Ave, the thing that Oguchi Onyewu is relishing the most at Jose Alvalade will be game time. The former Standard Liege man has never been able to feature week-in, week-out for a top side but has
taken to the pitch often for the Sportinguistas.
His good form in Liga Sagres has earned him a berth in the United States squad and the defender was highly impressive in his last outing.
Speaking to reporters, the trainer said Onyewu had returned to the national team fold a better player and it was mostly due to his new club Sporting Lisbon, who have allowed him to develop his skills further.
"That's why we call him, because his rhythm has returned due to the service of a very good team, Sporting. We have been following him closely over the past two weeks,” he said.
The manager also revealed that although the former Newcastle United man was a ‘great asset’ to the team, he will have to play regularly for his employers in order to be considered for the US squad.
"He is a great asset to us no doubt, but he needs to play all season," Jurgen Klinsmann was quoted as saying.
