US defeats Costa Ricans in Boys’ Youth Under-19 Pan American Cup quarter-final match: Volleyball
The Boys’ Youth Under-19 Pan American Cup is currently taking place in Mexicali, Mexico. Thursday, July 15, saw a clash take place between the U.S. and the Costa Rican squad in a one sided affair in which the Americans were able to completely dominate their
rivals by winning the quarter-final in a clean sweep.
The first set of the match was the only one in which the Costa Ricans were able to put up a challenge for the Americans. The second set was taken on by the Americans in a blitzkrieg fashion while the third was a quick job as well. In the short time that
the Americans took to finish off their rivals, the final set scores stood at the following points: 25-19, 25-4 and 25-12.
The start of the first set of the game saw both teams fight each other with a lot of energy. No side was letting the other take the lead and the match was tied at 7-7. However, the Americans eventually found themselves to be in a leading position at 14-10.
The Costa Ricans could not do much to keep the Americans from extending the advantage at 18-12. It was only a matter of time before the U.S. squad was able to seal the deal at 25-19.
Building on the momentum generated by winning the opening set of the game, the Americans were able to take a considerable lead at 10-1. Once the U.S. had the lead, the Costa Ricans could not manage to take it back from their rivals. Costa Rica fell apart
as the Americans were hammering down kill upon kill on their opponents and managed to bring the score first to 15-2 and then to 24-4. The Americans were able to bag the second set of the game at 25-4, the largest margin by which any team won a set in the tournament.
The third set also saw the Americans take the lead at 6-1which later turned into 18-7. Costa Rica could not do much to close in the gap and saw the Americans head off to 22-12 that was finished off with a final set win at 25-12.
The Americans are now moving on to the semi-final round by taking a 2-1 record to the courts where they will be meeting the Brazilian squad whereas Costa Rica finds itself out of the running by registering no win and three losses. Brazil finds itself on
the top of Pool A by securing two wins and no loss in comparison. The semi-final is scheduled to take place later today. On the other hand, the Costa Ricans will be contesting against Trinidad and Tobago in order to secure the fifth position in the tournament.
