US first lady Michelle Obama to lead US official delegation to London Olympics 2012
It has recently been revealed by the White House that the official Olympic Games delegation that the United States will be sending to take part in the upcoming London 2012 Olympic Games will be led by the US first lady, Michelle Obama.
It will not be the first time that the American first lady would have the honour of being the leader of the US Olympic Games delegation as various other first ladies in the past have also done so. The first US first lady to lead her country’s delegation
into the Olympic Games was Hilary Rodham Clinton, who did the honours way back in the year 1994 at the Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway.
After Clinton, it was Laura Bush who played the role of the leader for the US Olympic delegation in the 2006 Winter Olympics that took place in Torino, Italy.
The first lady of the US has scheduled to conduct a mini Olympic session on Tuesday for the children of the DC area. The first lady hopes to create physical awareness among the youth by conducting such activities which are a part of her Let’s Move! campaign.
The Let’s Move! Campaign aims to promote fitness as well as healthy eating habits in the American youth. The venue of the mini Olympic Games that the first lady plans to stage will be the American University.
Mrs. Obama will not be alone in this endeavour as the first lady of the country hosting the Olympic Games this time around will also join in. Samantha Cameron will be visiting the United States along with her husband, British Prime Minister David Cameron
for a period of two days.
The London 2012 Olympic Games are set to start from July 27, when the opening ceremony of the event will take place. The international sporting event will continue until August 12. The total number of nations that are sending their athletes to the Olympic
Games this time around are 204. In all, 10,500 athletes will be taking part in various sports. The London 2012 Olympic Games will be featuring 26 sports.
