US football fails to make it to London 2012 Olympic Games
The United States men’s national football team will not be taking part in the upcoming London 2012 Olympic Games as they missed the opportunity by losing to their counterparts from Canada as well as El Salvador in the Olympics qualifier event.
The qualifier event took place on American soil while the fate of the US team was sealed on Monday as they failed to proceed further from the group stage of the tournament. The US football team belonging in group A of the championship, lost first to the
Canadians then failed to win the match with El Salvador that ended in a tie.
The coach of the US team, Caleb Porter, expressed himself on the performance of his team in the following words, “The heart they showed, the passion they showed, the grit. They did everything they needed to do to win the game. In my opinion they deserved
better. I’ve never felt anything like this in my life. In some ways I’m still in shock. It was last second. It’s a painful moment. The players are devastated. To put in as much as they put in, to play the way they did in the second half. It’s unimaginable.”
The match with El Salvador saw the US team trailing behind at 1-2 but the Americans were able to rally themselves together and step up their performance in order to take the lead at 3-2. However, the El Salvador squad was able to make the match reach a tie
at 3-3 and eliminate the chances of the US of going ahead into the London 2012 Olympic Games which are to be held from July 27 and last till August 12.
Mexico will be moving on to the semi final round of the competition from Group B. On the other hand, the match between Honduras, Trinidad and Tobago will decide the other team that is able to secure the remaining spot in the final four.
The two teams that will be able to top the Concacaf region will automatically qualify to take part in the London 2012 Olympic Games irrespective of the results of the current tournament.
