Also, what are good reliable websites in English (besides the respective country's consulates/embassies) with up-to-date information about visa requirements for all countries - especially South and Central America- for persons of Indian origin (passport issued by India) with US green card (Permanent Resident Alien card)

Such things can have very bad consequences.  I had a co-worker (european) who went to Canada with his family while they were here on visitor visas while he was here on a work visa.  The renewal for his visa had been processed, and he had a piece of paper saying so...but he hadn't been back home to get it updated in his passport.

The US wouldn't let him back in and Canada told him he was there illegally.  His employer helped him out and the Canadian consolate gave him a few days to stay there (so that he could catch a plane back to Europe).  He had to stay in Europe until the visa was updated in his passport before he could come back and continue working.

Just messy consequences...(the funny thing is is that passports were not required at the time to cross the border, so he could have avoided the whole mess by just presenting his US Driver's license instead of his passport)

As a U.S.greencard holder, you do not need a visa to travel to Mexico.  You will get a tourist card on the plane or at the border.  To see if you need a visa for other countries you may want to travel to ,you can use the website below.  Just enter your nationality, enter that you are an alien resident of the U.S.A., enter your destination, then click or  the information.  It will tell you if you need a visa or not.

Starting January 23rd, 2007 all United States citizens must be in possession of a valid US passport to enter Mexico. United States legal residents (Green Card holders) need their original Green Card and a passport from their country of origin.
