US sweeps Egypt in second round: FIVB Girls’ Youth World Championship - Volleyball
Thursday, 18th August saw scheduled play betweem Egypt and U.S. the competition was part of the second round of the FIVB Girls’ Youth World Championship that is currently taking place in Ankara, Turkey, and the venue of the Pool G match was Ankara
Arena. As the match reached its close, the Americans had made a clean sweep over the Egyptian side and added a third win to their winning streak.
Despite the fact that the first two sets of the match were fairly dominated by the Americans with the Egyptians trailing behind in each one, the third set saw a fierce battle between the two sides. Playing with a loss of the first two sets energised the
Egyptians into showing excellent team spirit. However, the effort came in too late from the Egyptians and the Americans prevailed in sealing a victory by winning three back to back sets at the following final set scores: 25-16, 25-15 and 30-28.
The coach of the American team, James Stone, expressed himself in the following words at the press conference after the match: "I was impressed by Egyptian defence and libero with their roles in every point. Their libero was a very important part of the
play and she fought for every point. Their blockings were very good and they were aggressive in attack especially in the last set. I am very happy that we won this match.”
Whereas the Egyptian coach Ahmed Mohamed shared his views in these words: "Today it was the best match that we played. When we came to 3rd set we played better than USA team. USA is a very good team and could be at 1-8. We hope that other matches to be like
this.''
The Americans were leading the opening set at 8-5 by the time the first technical time out came. Egypt did not give up and kept on the trail but when they were on the verge of overtaking the Americans, the U.S. was able to improve their lead to 16-10 and
go all the way to win the set 25-16.
In the next set, the Americans were leading again at 8-4 when the first technical time out of the second set came but the Egyptians were able to tie the score at 10-10. But before Egypt could gain any head way, the Americans took the lead at 16-12 and stuck
with it till they had bagged the second set at 25-15.
The third set was tied early at 5-5 and saw the Egyptians leading at 16-12 but the Americans equalised the score at 20-20. The match remained tough until the end when the Americans finally earned a win at 30-28.
Jordan Burgess of the U.S. was the top scorer as he posted 19 points for her team while the Egyptian Mai Moustafa added 10 points to become the highest scorer on her team.
