US sweeps Mexico in a Men's Pan American match – Volleyball news
A Group B match of the Men's Pan American Cup VII took place between US and Mexico on Tuesday, July 10, 2012. The city of Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic was playing host to the match that took place at the Ricardo Arias sports hall. The US team
was able to assert itself as they took the win by bagging three straight sets in front of 75 spectators.
The US made a clean sweep over Mexico in one hour and 15 minutes at the following final set scores: 25-8, 25-16 and 25-18.
The coach of the US side, Shawn Patchell, expressed his feelings at the win in the following words, “At first we were concerned with the service of Mexico that we consider very good and focused on that aspect. Now I am proud of my boys because they received
very well. We look forward to tomorrow's game against Brazil, but I trust my team.”
On the other hand, the coach of the Mexican squad, Jorge Azair, shared his disappointment at the loss by giving the following comments, “They missed a lot, although we knew it would be difficult to defeat the United States and Brazil. So we must take advantage
tomorrow against Venezuela to get a win in the pool.”
The highest scorer of the match was the US player Troy Murphy with 14 points to boast. Murphy was assisted by his team mate Taylor Sander who put up a score of nine. On the other hand, the most points scored on the Mexican side were seven which were tallied
by Leonardo Manzo.
The American team was able to stand out as compared to the Mexicans in terms of attacking, blocking as well as serving that contributed towards a US win.
The first set of the match started off with the US storming ahead quickly with the lead. The gap between the two sides increased dramatically as the Mexicans could not get their act together to provide a significant challenge to their rivals. As a result,
the US was able to bag the first set by smothering the Mexicans at 25-8.
The second set saw a bit of a change in the performance of the Mexicans as they were able to take the lead early on. However, the US did not let their rivals get too far ahead and took the advantage for themselves. Once the US had the lead, they were able
to extend it further while the Mexicans trailed behind till the US had secured the second set as well at 25-16.
The US was leading in the third set at the beginning but the Mexicans were able to overtake them and take charge. The US had some difficulty in getting the control back but once they had taken the lead, US did not look back until the third set was sealed
at 25-18.
