US to Canadian border check?

If you are driving across the border to Canada from the US or vice versa, has anyone checked your car for illegal downloading/pirated material on your iPod or laptop?

Also, do they xray scan your car, because how do they know if you're hiding anything?

That kind of indepth inspection is reserved for those that exhibit an " bad attitude " or  who have been previously caught trying to smuggle items into Canada, or the USA.

Xrays? Yes,  but not usually for  passenger cars. Commercial trucks/trailers  are scanned as a matter of course. Searches of cars and vans are done by sniffer dogs and humans.

So , how do they decide to  do a search ?

Your answers, your behaviour  and most importantly  the way that you present yourself at the booth .  Nervous, stammering, sweating, shaking, won't look the inspector in the eye, changing your  story.

These are the most basic indicators  that any good investigator is trained to see,  and follow up on.. Remember that when you  are   trying to enter anotherr country, honesty is all ways the best policy.
