US women’s beach volleyball teams wins in pool play of smart Grand Slam Rome – Volleyball news
The pool pay matches of the smart Grand Slam Rome took place on June 13, 2012. The tournament is part of the 2012 FIVB SWATCH World Tour, in which the United States women’s beach volleyball teams were all able to secure wins.
The duo of Jennifer Kessy (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) /April Ross (Costa Mesa, Calif.) was able to grab themselves the number four seed in the tournament’s pool play. On the other hand, the pair of May-Treanor (Santa Monica, Calif.) and Kerri Walsh (San
Jose, Calif.) got hold of the number sixth seed in the Rome main draw.
Kessy and Ross were up against Shauna Mullin and Zara Dampney from Great Britain, the English duo that holds the 29th seed, in their first match of pool play. It did not take the US pair long to hand out a defeat to their opponents as the match reached its
close within 33 minutes at the following final set scores: 21-9 and 21-13.
The opening set of the match saw the US squad take the lead early on and within no time, they left their rivals far behind. The English pair could not match the pace of their rivals and let the frame be won by the US duo easily at a significant margin.
Next in line for Kessy and Ross is a match against their counter parts from the Czech Republic on Thursday. The Czech Hana Klapalova and Lenka Hajeckova hold the 20th seed. After the meet up with the Czech players, Kessy and Ross will be heading on to meet
the German pair of Katrin Holtwick and Ilka Semmler, which holds the number 13 seed.
The smart Grand Slam Rome tournament that is currently under way is significant in terms of qualifying for the London 2012 Olympic Games. The top teams will earn points that will bring them closer to get hold of the Olympics qualifying ticket. The importance
of this tournament increased as this is the last chance that the competing teams will get in order to win points for the Olympic Games that are scheduled to take place on July 27, 2012.
