US women’s team continue with success at the 2012 Olympic Games – Volleyball News
Two big giants of the women’s volleyball world, the USA and Brazil, crossed their ways on Monday, July 30 at the Earls Court in London. The two sides contested their skills for more than two hours and eventually USA grabbed success. The final set scores
were 3-1 (25-18, 25-17, 22-25, 25-21).
First set of the match featured a lot of action. US players formed nice combos and added quick points. Brazilians responded right away and remained hand-in-hand with the rival side. USA picked up lead, but Brazil hit the equalizer at 11-all. The see-saw
battle continued until the second technical timeout. Thereafter, the Americans played fast and closed first set at 25-18.
US team carried the momentum in the following set and did not allow Brazil to come up. Hooker and Larson developed a great chemistry between them and added a flurry of points. Brazil failed to cope with the power of killing spikes and deadly aces from US
side, and suffered the loss of another set in row.
Despite a lot of pressure, Brazil managed to make a difference in third set. Brazilian team sent 25-22 on board to claim third set. However, their happiness was short-lived as opposite team made a quick comeback in fourth set. Americans captured the final
set with four points and settled for 3-1 victory.
Victory moved USA to 2-0 in the tournament, while Brazil received first defeat in the competition and shifted to 1-1. American victory was mainly credited to an outstanding performance by Destinee Hooker and Jordan Larson, who combined for 41 points in the
match. Hooker added match-high 23 points and she was followed by Larson with 18 points. Logan Tom of the USA also played her part and contributed 11 points.
For Brazil, top spiker Sheila Castro charted 14 points. Thaisa Menezes finished with 11 points, while Fabiana Claudino and Paula Pequeno each had 10 points.
Brazilian Captain Fabiana Claudino regretted the loss of crucial match. She expressed her opinion in the following statement: “It was only in the second set that we started to understand that USA was playing to our weakest points. We didn't do a good match.
We had a lot of errors since the first set. We really need to avoid doing the same errors and we need to improve our defence because we know that we can do much better. "We know that USA is very strong and we cannot play like we did today. We need to improve
all our fundamentals.”
Next up, China is ready to face the World No. 1 US team on Wednesday. American squad is enjoying a top form and has brighter prospects to win the match against China. On the other hand, Brazil will go against South Korea.
