What are the pros and cons of man-to-man defense and Zone?

Why is Coach K so insistent on using the man-to-man as oppose to the zone defense? I mean it looks like it's not helping the U.S defense much, I keep seeing open 3 point shots being made against the U.S because they fail to defend pick-n-rolls.

Wouldn't the Zone defense be best suited for this kind of tournament?

Tell me what you guys think. No immature answers please.

  1. Man to man defense is good if you have guys that can make matchup well physically and athletically with the other team, but, if cant matchup you can be exploited where your weakest player is. If you play a zone it benefits a team with really good team defense like the Celtics, or Spurs its a good way to conserve energy and use more traps to force turnovers. The only thing is that if you have a team that moves the ball really well then they can move the ball to get open shots, so you have to be active on defense to take advantage of playing zone defense. I think the USA just has to stay active and they can use both defenses to their advantage, as long as they're willing to play defense for an entire game.

  2. i think coach k knows what hes doing. keep in mind a lot of their points come from fast breaks wich come from steels and rebounds. they had a lot of steels against china that resulted in fast break baskets.

if they played a zone, it would keep other teams from getting inside as much, but they would not get to run the ball as much and running the ball is one of their greatest streangths. keep in mind that they are not a great shooting team.

  3. Pros of man to man with the US team: American basketball, in particular men's basketball has been based on this type of defense.  The biggest pro of it is that this is the best defense that the men on the American team know.  Coach K's Duke teams have also played with pressure man to man defense, and this is what he considers to be the foundation of this success.  The man to man defense was required in the NBA until recently when some zone defenses can be used, but even today, the zone is used rather sparingly.  In particular, man to man defense is best among athletic teams and players, and the US team is the most athletic team out there.  In addition the man to man defense concept also plays into the matchups we see in the NBA all the time, like "Kobe vs. Pierce", "KG vs Dirk", "Yao vs Shaq" or "LeBron vs. Deshawn".

The zone defense is a better defense than the man to man if a team knows how to play both equally.  But the zone defense is also used by teams which lack size and or athleticism as well when they play superior teams.  The zone defense essentially allows players to move toward the ball, but each player is still primarily responsible for one area of the court.  This is effective in preventing players from driving toward the basket for easy layups.  Thus one way to beat a zone defense is good outside shooting, which is why many of these European teams are deadly from beyond the arc.  They all play zone, and if they can't drive to the hoop, they'll just shoot and make a three in your face.  In general zone defense is a more team oriented defense, which also is less tiring to players than the man to man when a particular defender has to chase his man all over the place.  In the US you will see more zone among women's basketball teams in college and the WNBA, but they too are using more man to man in their game as well.

The American men in general haven't played much zone in their lives, and they have a coach who won't use it unless his team is not deep or is playing against a team with a big slasher which most of these European teams lack, so he believes the athleticism of the man to man will be effective enough for the US to win games.
