USA Cycling announces team for 2012 Summer Olympic Games for women- Cycling News
USA Cycling announced 30 athletes, who are eligible to compete for the Summer Olympic Games 2012 in the women’s road events. USA Cycling Vice President of Athletics, Jim Miller, will be sending 13 brilliant riders to participate in the Summer Olympics.
The 13 cyclists named were: US road champion Robin Farina, Megan Guarnier, Evelyn Stevens, Theresa Cliff-Ryan, Andrea Dvorak, Megan Guarnier, Janel Holcomb, Kristin McGrath, Amanda Miller, Shelley Olds, Carmen Small, Evelyn Stevens and Lauren Tamayo.
Kristin Armstrong, Olympic time trial gold medalist, and Amber Neben, time trial World champion, will also take part in the Summer Olympics and both of them are favourites to win the race.
Armstrong is the best sprinter rider with strong abilities to win the race. She showed a good performance in the third stage and took the overall standing of Sea Otter Classic. She also won the women’s time trial in the Tour of California.
The Vice President told the media, "The hard work and determination of these athletes has helped USA Cycling advance its vision of making the U.S. the most successful country in the world of competitive cycling".
He added, "They are evidence of the United States' ability to be a legitimate medal contender across all four disciplines of competitive cycling in London. The athletes on this list have either proven their capabilities to win medals in major international
events or illustrated the potential to do so in the future".
Amber Neben also displayed a good effort in the 2011 season. She won the GP Stad Roeselare and the overall runner-up’s spot in Internationale Thuringen Rundfahrt der Frauen.
She also won the Chrone des Nations race by easily beating Kristin Armstrong and Olga Zabelinskaya.   
USA stated that the team will be determined by competitive results at the main international events in 2011, while the men’s Olympic part will not be decided by the same-long term method.
However, the team and the number of riders who will represent the US will be announced by May 2012.
Meanwhile, the women events will take place on 29 July and it will begin on The Mall. Only time will reveal the happenings of the Summer Olympic season.
The final roster of the long team, for both men and women, will be announced on December 15.
