For example:

A student plans to go to the US for an undergraduate degree - Bachelor of Architecture which is a 5 year degree.

The entire cost (tuition + expenses) for one year = $50,000

Is the student expected to show $50,000 while applying for the visa ?

OR

Is the student expected to show $50,000 X 5 (amount per year X number of years) = $250,000

  1. You have to show that you can pay the tuition for the first year, plus all living expenses for the first year (which is usually not too much). Check with your school and see what numbers they put on your I-20 form. If it's $50,000, then you have to show min of $50,000.

Also, please keep in mind that the only work you might be able to get to supplement your income is work on campus. You will not be legally allowed to work off the campus.

  2. you need to show that you have access to the entire $250,000 for the entire course.

You should NOT depend on having a work permit to pay for everything in years 2 through 5.

If for any reason  you dont get a work permit and therefore no money - HOW will you pay for those years?

  3. the student is expected to show a minimum of $50,000. but it is always good to show more than what the school is asking for one year just to put all the chances on your side. for example when I applied for my student visas the school was asking me to show $19,000 for one year but my mom decided to show $30,000. and I was supposed to be in school for 4 years.
