Question:

USA Green Card/Au Pair Question?

I would love the opportunity to live in NY or LA. I'm an actress, with plenty of experience and education in the field.

I know immigration into the States is tough. I have the option of applying for an O-1 Visa for Aliens of Extraordinary Abilities (in the Arts). But this is very difficult to get, and you need a really impressive resume. Although I have a long resume of good work, they set the bar quite high and require lead roles in TV and the like. Which I don't yet have.

So to my question. Is it possible for me to work as an Au pair in the states (they organise a J-1 Visa for you), and while I'm there apply for a Green Card? I like kids, and it would be a great experience to get to know the country better.

Does anyone have any knowledge in this field?

  1. Don't use the au pair route as you would only be allowed to work as an au pair and wouldn't even be able to take an acting job if it was offered.

You will need to keep working at home and get the experience you need to show your ability. Set yourself the goalof getting a lead role or two. I know it isn't easy but you have to try it over and over. Never give up.

  2. The problem is that you would not be able to work as an actress, only an au pair.  Also, you need to attend classes (this is an educational exchange program).  And you have to go home after one year and the program cannot be extended.  So I do not think that you will be able to apply for a green card.

  3. you can apply to work as a au pair, but you never get a green card that way.
