USA and Australia win - FIBA U-19 World Championship Round-up of July 5, 2011: (Part 2)
Game-3/8: USA 107 – Lithuania 105
Jeremy Lamb almost single-handedly guided USA to a 107-105 nail biting extra time victory over Lithuania on Tuesday in a Group-F game. The American squad is leading all the teams in their group with 11 points and five victories.
Lamb scored game-high 35 points, grabbed four rebounds, provided two assists and made three steals for USA. During his 37 minutes stay on court, Lamb hit 13 of 23 from the field, five of seven from the three-point range and four
of five from the paint.
Lithuanians were sluggish in the beginning, while USA took the charge straight away and used a 25-15 run to outperformed Lithuania in the first quarter.
Trailing by 10 points at the start of the second quarter, Lithuania quickly shifted the gears and picked up the pace. The Lithuanian offensive unit made some quick possessions and notched the lead down, but their defence let them
down, as the both teams hit 24 points each in the period that enabled USA to seal another frame in their favour by 49-39 advantage at the halftime.
The scuffle continued after the break, but the American squad didn’t allow the Lithuanians to come in front.
USA led Lithuania by 69-60 into the fourth quarter of the game and it seemed at that stage that United State will easily cruise to the victory, but Lithuanian squad were thinking otherwise. As Lithuania ablaze the court on fire,
when they rattled USA with a furious 34-25 burst and tied the scores 94-94 that pushed the game into extra-time.
USA quickly got themselves together and managed to squeak past the Lithuanians in overtime, with a 13-11 run in the ensuing passage.
Centre Jonas Valanciunas contributed the most for Lithuania, scored 30 points during his 38 minutes log together with 15 rebounds, one assist and one steal.
Game-4/8: Australia 63 – Brazil 57
Small forward Mitchell Creek scored 23 points and powered Australia to defeat Brazil 63-57 in a Group-E game on Tuesday. Australians climbed up to the first spot in Group-E with 11 wins, as they grabbed their fifth victory of the
tournament out of six games.
Creek led Australia from the front, as he led all scorers with his game-high 23 points along with 10 rebounds and five steals. His team-mate shooting guard Hugh Greenwood chipped in with 17 points.
Both teams were on their toes right from the tip of the game, as none of them didn’t let the momentum slip away. The scores remained tied as each team tallied 12 points in the first quarter.
The tussle continued in the second quarter as both Australia and Brazil were looking to dominate each other. However none of them managed to secure a quarter in the first half of the game and the scores remained tied 28-28 at the
halftime.
However, in the third period Australia eventually made the break through and sealed the first frame of the game in their favour with a 17-14 run.
Australia guided Brazil with a 45-42 lead into the final quarter and never allowed the Brazilian squad to make a comeback. Australians extended their lead and went on to register the game in their favour with an 18-15 surge in
the last frame.
Point guard Raul Neto was the leading scorer from Brazilian side, scored 19 points, grasped three rebounds and dished out two assists as well during his 33 minutes stay on court.
