USA and Japan record wins: FIBA U-19 World Championship for Women Roundup July 22, 2011(Part 2)
USA 76 – Russia 53
On the second day of the FIBA World Championship, USA defeated Russia 76-53 in Group-B game. With this win USA grabbed the first spot in their group with four points. USA dominated Russia from the field, shooting 40.3 percent in
comparison to 25.9 percent by Russia.
Diamond Deshields was the leading scorer for USA with 16 points, four rebounds and one assist in nearly19 minutes. She went six of 12 from the field and four of five from the free throw line. Breanna Stewart also added 14 points,
three rebounds one assist and one steal for the American side.
For Russia, Kseniya Andreeva led the way with 15 points, three rebounds and one steal. She played for 22 minutes and shot 3-of-6 from the three point range and 2-of-2 from the free throw line. Ekaterina Kubynina racked up12 points,
grasped four rebounds and made two steals for Russia.
Russians were slow to start and that eventually cost them the game. USA made most of their opportunities in the first 10 minutes and raced to an 18-7 lead at the end of the first quarter. Team USA performed even better in the second
quarter. They nailed 22 points in the second period as opposed to only12 by the Russians and when the first half came to an end, USA led their rivals 40-19.
The one way traffic continued in the third quarter as well and USA led Russia by 65-32, going into the final quarter.
Instead going for a kill, USA took it easy in the fourth quarter. The Russians made their charge and slashed a 33 point deficit by ten to finish the game 53-76.
Japan 90 – Argentina 71
After dropping their first game, Japan did extremely well against Argentina. The Japanese squad overpowered Argentina 90-71 win on Friday in another Group-B game. The win gave Japan their first two points of the contest.
Aya Watanabe led all scorers with 33 points and 11 rebounds to lead Japan, who also got three assists and three steals from her. Aya finished the game on a 57.9 percent shooting from the field including 62.5 percent from beyond
the arc. She also slipped in 85.7 percent of her free throws. Sanae Motokawa also scored 18 points and grabbed six rebounds for Japan.
Natasha Spiatta led Argentina with 12 points. She shot 55.6 percent from the field and 33.3 percent from the paint. Diana Cabrera added 11 points and 11 rebounds, while Melisa Gretter made 10 points, seven rebounds and four assists
for Argentina.
Both teams made a solid start and at the end of the first quarter, the scores were tied at 23.
Argentina, however completely collapsed in the second quarter. The Japanese team scorched the Argentineans with a 20-3 blitz and led them by 43-26 at halftime. It was all Japan after that as they raced to a 19 point win.
