USA captures Men’s 5km Open Water Swim crown in Shanghai - 2011 FINA World Championships
American swimmers put up a wonderful show to stun the crowd on day two of the 2011 FINA World Championships in Open Water Swimming. The meet was held in Shanghai, China, on Wednesday, July 20.
The session of the championship conducted the Men’s 5km Open Water Swim meet, where Andrew Gemmell, Sean Ryan and Ashley Twichell of USA earned the golden crown with a sterling time of 57 minutes and 00.6 seconds. After the corresponding meet, the American
swimmers were really pleased with their collective effort in the championship.
Andrew Gemmell previously grabbed the silver medal in the Men’s 10km Open Water Swim at the 2009 World Championships, in Rome.
In the corresponding race, Australia snared the silver medal with a winning time of 57 minutes and 01.8 seconds. The Aussie squad consisted of Melissa Gorman, Ky Hurst and Rhys Mainstone.
Germany took home the bronze medal with a respective time of 57 minutes and 44.2 seconds. The German open water swim squad comprised of Jan Wolfgarten, Thomas Lurz and Isabelle Haerle.
In the following event, Italy wound up fourth with a time of 58 minutes and 00.5 seconds. Russia was placed fifth in a time of 58 minutes and 32.7 seconds, while Greece earned sixth place honours with a time of 59 minutes and 22.8 seconds.
France put up an impressive performance in the final meet and earned the seventh place with a time of 1 hour and 27.3 seconds. China captured eighth spot with a time of 1 hour, 01 minute and 02.2 seconds, whereas, Argentina wound up ninth in time of 1 hour,
01 minute and 34.2 seconds. Canada secured the tenth place in a time of 1 hour, 02 minutes and 08.7 seconds.
In another meet, Greece’s Spyros Gianniotis secured the golden crown in the Men’s 10km Open Water Swim with a sterling time of 1 hour, 54 minutes and 24.7 seconds.

Lurz Thomas of Germany grabbed silver in 1 hour, 54 minutes and 27.2 seconds, while Bolshakov Sergey of Russia captured bronze in a time of 1 hour, 54 minutes and 31.8 seconds.
