USA defeats Brazil 3-2 in final round of World Grand Prix – Volleyball news
The first match of the final round of the World Grand Prix took place on Wednesday, June 27, 2012 between USA and Brazil. The host city of the final round of the competition is Ningbo, China. The contest between the two sides was as thrilling as expected
as it went on for five sets and ended in a win for the defending champions USA.
The score board showed the following final set scores: 25-19, 25-17, 19-25, 13-25 and 15-13.
The captain of the US squad, Danielle Scott-Arruda, expressed her joy at the win in the following words, “We are happy to start the tournament with a win, and we are looking forward for the next match tomorrow.”
On the other hand, the Brazilian coach Jose R. Guimaraes, shared his sentiments at the loss in the following manner, “Congratulate to the US team for the well play especially in the first and second set. In the third set, we started playing better but we
made some mistakes in the fifth set. Overall we did improved today and hopefully we do it better in the next match.”
The recent win was accomplished by the USA squad in a period of two hours and five minutes and it has given them two points in the final round of the tournament while the Brazilians have been able to secure one.
The player who was able to score the maximum number of points for the US side was Megan Hodge with a score of 16.
The opening set started off with a quick Brazilian lead at 4-1 but by the time that the first technical time out came, USA was leading at 8-7. After the two teams started playing again, USA was able to maintain their advantage and take it further at 12-7
and later on to 17-11 at which point the Brazilian coach called for a time out. The Brazilians then closed in the gap at 20-16 but USA sealed the deal on the first set by bagging it at 25-19.
USA was leading in the second set at 8-2 but the Brazilians managed to close in the gap at 11-10 and eventually grab the lead at 14-12. USA was not about to give up easily and they stormed ahead to get back the advantage at 21-16. After that point, it was
only a matter of time before US had the second set at 25-17.
Under the pressure of losing to US by a clean sweep, the Brazilians were able to step up their game and they rebounded in the third set to secure it at 25-19. The confidence generated by winning the third set made the Brazilians come out strong in the fourth
one which they won by a comfortable margin at 25-13.
However, USA took their revenge in the fifth set by asserting themselves with an impressive 15-13 win.
