USA defeats Brazil by 3-1 in a FIVB Women World Grand Prix match – Volleyball news
USA was able to continue its winning streak in the FIVB World Grand Prix – Women on June 17, 2012 by securing their sixth win.
The defending champions were able to defeat the Olympic champions Brazil by 3-1 in a pool play match of the tournament that was played in Sao Bernardo, Brazil.
The scoreboard showed the following final set scores: 20-25, 25-18, 25-18 and 25-23.
The home team was able to bag the only the opening frame as USA was able to dominate the next two. The fourth set of the match was closely contested by both the sides but USA was able to earn a win by handing out the first defeat of the tournament to the
home team.
The coach of the USA side, Hugh McCutcheon, expressed his satisfaction with the win by making the following comments, “It was a really tough match. We played in an amazing atmosphere and Brazil was great in defence, what made the match really difficult for
us. I am glad as my team played focused and did what we had agreed even in this unique atmosphere.”
On the other hand, the coach of the Brazilian side, Jose Roberto Guimaraes, commented on the outcome of the match by making the following statements, “The American deserved to win. They played better than us during the whole match, except the first set...The
United States is the best team in the world now and this match is an important lesson for us on the way to London.”
The players who were able to get the title of the top scorers of the match belonged both to USA and Brazil. From the US side, Jordan Larson while the Brazilian Thaisa Menezes both tallied the highest number of points in the match by putting up a score of
20 each.
The US side will now be heading towards Bangkok in order to meet Thailand, Argentina and Serbia while the Brazilians will be up against China, Cuba and Puerto Rico in Pool K of the tournament.
The recent win has enabled the USA to tally 18 points in the tournament while the home team has come down to 11 after registering a defeat.
