USA defeats Peru by 3-0: FIVB Volleyball World Grand Prix
The last day of the preliminary round of the FIVB Volleyball World Grand Prix took place on Sunday, August 21 and saw U.S.A compete with Peru in Hong Kong. What followed was a competition in which the Americans were able to defeat the Peruvians in a clean
sweep. Not only did the Americans win the match in three back to back sets, they did so by handing out a smothering defeat.
The first set of the match was pretty much one sided as the Americans were able to start strong and stick with the advantage till the very end. The Peruvians managed to step up their game in the second set but they could not show consistency of performance
in the end as the Americans bagged another win. The third set saw the Peruvians battle less forcefully and it was only a matter of time before the Americans won the match at the following final set scores: 25-13, 25-18 and 25-15.
The coach of the American squad, Hugh McCutcheon, made the following statements at the press conference after the match: “I am very happy with our win. I thought our team did better this weekend than last weekend. Our athletes did play hard and stick to
the plan. We are in general happy with the win.”
While the Peruvian coach Luca Cristofani expressed himself by giving these comments: “I am glad about our performance today. The only two things we can compare to USA are serving and receiving. We hope to keep growing each day.”
The Americans took the lead easily in the first set of the match at 3-0 which they were able to extend largely because the Peruvian squad starting making errors. The U.S did not let go of the advantage and were still leading at 13-7. Peru kept trailing as
the Americans marched on towards a first set win at 25-13.
The second set of the match was tough as both sides struggled to take control. The match reached a tie at 8-8 but the Americans eventually managed to get hold of the advantage and stay with it until the end. Peru could not stop America from securing another
win at 25-18.
Capitalising on the momentum generated by winning the first two sets, the Americans started off the third set with confidence and the Peruvians could not challenge the U.S. into jeopardizing their advantage. Therefore, it was only a matter of time before
the Americans sealed the deal on the third set at 25-15.
The Americans did not need to win the game in order to move on to the next round as they were already qualified for the matches to be played in Macau during the next week.
