USA finishes the pool-play of Men’s Pan Am Cup without any loss – Volleyball News
Two big giants of the VII Pan American Men’s Volleyball Cup, the USA and Brazil, came into a contest in the third pool-play match of Pool B on Wednesday.
The Ricardo Arias sports hall in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic set up the field of play for a cracking match. Brazil took a great start in the game and secured the first set, 25-22. However, the Americans responded in the following sets and sent Brazil
to 3-1 loss. US team claimed the last three sets in row, 25-23, 25-20, 25-22, and extended its winning streak to 3-0.
The match was opened on a high note. Both teams showed quality in serves and hit from different angles. Brazil reeled off consecutive points, while USA did not let the opponent go far. Lead was regularly traded between two sides and scoreboard experienced
a lot of variation. Brazil earned a three-point advantage to close the first set (25-22) and went on front with 1-0 record.
US hotshots were quick to respond in the second set. Brazil strengthened its defence, but the American shots found a way to land on the opponents’ half. Despite facing a lot of resistance, the US team clawed its way to second-set win at 25-23.
Success in second set helped the US team to get its full form back. They proved their supremacy on the net and claimed third set, 25-20. Brazil rallied hard to push the Americans behind, but failed to do so. USA emerged successful in fourth set (25-22) and
announced match victory.
Victory of US team was mainly credited to Taylor Sander, who put up great effort and had match-high 23 points. His teammates Antonio Ciarelli and Carson Clark registered 16 and 12 respectively. Gustavo Bonatto supported Brazil with 18 points, while he was
followed by Mauricio Borges and Franco Cargnin, who added 14 with 13 points, in the loss.
Shawn Patchell, U.S. coach: "It was a good game at the end. Having to play Brazil got the best out of us. We are going to continue to improve and now we’ll rest on Thursday and prepare for our next rival, trying to avoid Brazil. Playing against them the
matches are very close. The key was the service in the third set. Then we improved, recovered and got the win.
Leonardo Carvalho, Coach of Brazil, praised the effort of US team. He openly acknowledged that the US team performed better and most essentially deserved to win the match. Meanwhile, the captain of Brazil Raphael Vieira stated: "It was a tough match, as
it is always when we play any team of United States. We need to focus more and expect better results in the next matches to be able to reach the finals.”
