USA immigration question?

My girlfriend and I are considering immigration from the UK to the USA, however we are finding it difficult to start the process. Does anyone know where we need to go or if it is possible to talk to the immigration service and discuss any questions before starting the procedure? If so, how do we go about talking to these people?
