USA starts the XI Women’s Pan Am Cup with victory over Canada – Volleyball News
Nancy Metcalf and Lauren Gibbemeyer dominated play at the net with 14 points each in the second match of Pool A of the XI Women’s Pan American Volleyball Cup on Thursday and led USA to straight sets victory.
USA edged out Canada 3-0 (25-15, 25-22, 25-15), while the match took place at the Gimnasio UACJ sports hall in CIUDAD JUÁREZ, México. Around 400 people watched the live action of volleyball at the arena. US team improved to 1-0 in the tournament, whereas
the loss shifted Canada to 0-1 in the campaign.
Clad in No. 9 jersey Jennifer Tamas served for USA and helped the team to take a good start in the match. Nancy and Kristin attempted successful attacks and put USA in lead. Canadian team had a slow start in the match and trailed behind for better time in
the opening stanza. US ladies led the score all the way till end and closed set-1 with 10 points, 25-15.
After dropping the first frame, Canadian team followed some good steps and came up with improved performance. Arnd Ludwig, the Canadian head coach, seemed happy to see the progress in the second set. Nevertheless, USA’s Lauren offered solid defence and
killed many of attacks from opponents. Second set of the match covered its run in 27 minutes and ended with final score of 25-22. Canada displayed better action on the net, but lost the set with a deficit of three points.
In the decisive third set, US team continued with success and kept an upper hand on the rival side. Better attack and defence led USA to victory in third set. USA closed third set with 25-15 on board and announced match victory.
Stacy Sykora of USA shared her views about the match. She stated: “Victory is always great. Canada is a very strong team and I am very happy for playing again. Actually this is my first Team USA match after that accident and I really wanted to get back and
play volleyball again.”
“I decided to use her just in the right time and she did a good job,” he remarked. “For me as coach and for USA Volleyball is unbelievable to see her recovering and we are very happy she is back again,” said the American Coach Reed Sunahara.
In the next match on Friday, USA will take on Puerto Rico. Likewise, Canada will be challenged by Dominican Republic. Check back for more news and updates.
