USA sweeps Korea in a FIVB World League match – Volleyball news
USA and Korea contested against each other on Sunday June 24, 2012 in a Pool C match of the FIVB World League. The match was being held in Gwangju, Korea. It did not take the US squad long to bag a win as they made a clean sweep over the home team.
The score board showed the following final set scores: 25-20, 25-18 and 25-18.
Even though the Koreans were playing in their home ground, they could only manage to challenge USA in the opening set as Korea lost the second and the third sets by a significant margin. It took USA an hour and 15 minutes to earn the win.
The coach of the US squad, John Speraw, expressed his satisfaction at the win by giving the following statements, “The first two sets were very good. Serving and defence were excellent. Overall, it was a great match. I am very satisfied with today’s game.”
On the other hand, the coach of the Korean side, Park Ki-won, showed his disappointment with the outcome of the match by making the following comment, “Today, the poor service reception was the key to our defeat.”
Interestingly, one player from each side was able to score the same number of points to become the top scorers of the match. Park Chul-Woo of Korea and Matthew Anderson of USA scored the highest number of points in the match by tallying a score of 13 each.
The recent win has enabled the US squad to earn a total of seven wins and two defeats overall in the tournament that has given them 20 points so far. On the other hand, the Koreans have only been able to manage one victory while they have suffered eight
defeats in the current championship.
The first set of the match started out well for both the sides with the score fairly level. The US managed to take the lead but Korea was still tagging close behind at 17-16. However, US extended the gap as they propelled themselves forwards to bag the opening
frame of the game at 25-20.
The confidence generated by winning the previous set made the US take a quick lead at the start of the second set which they were able to stretch further. Korea tried to mend matters but US did not give them much of a chance as they steadily moved towards
a second set win at 25-18.
The third set of the match progressed much the same way as the second one with the US taking the lead early and dominating the courts while Korea put in a half hearted effort in order to avoid a sweep. However, US were going on too strong for the Koreans
and they easily secured the third set at 25-18.
