Question:

USA to UK converter voltage help??

I just tried to swap the US two plug for a three way English plug and just plugged it into the mains without realising I needed a converter as well. It was used to try and start my xbox 360 which is a ntsc version and not pal. I heard a big bang and now the brick smells of smoke. Will I have to buy a replacement brick for my xbox or will I just have to replace the fuse??

  1. Whenever converting different International voltages, you must keep in mind both the voltage ~115AC  or 220-240AC but also the cycles, 60 Hz or 50 Hz.  Many electronic devices have that range built into the power supply and you will see it rated as 115-240 AC...this means it already has the switch built into it and you just need to adapt the plug.

    Apparently the 360 does not.

So you need a true voltage converter.  Do not use the solid state versions as they are only good for short-term usage (a shaver, coffee maker, hair dryer) instead use a true transformer.  You can tell the different by the weight, a transformer is much heavier, but also it is listed for long term use (battery charger, game system, etc)

If you hear more than a mere pop...and it smells of smoke, I am thinking you toasted the brick.  Be thankful if that is as far as it went.  But since fuses and fusible links are much less expensive than a power supply, replace the fuse first.  Be sure to match the rated amperage and voltage of the fuse to that which you are replacing.  Not over, not under.  If it works, hurrah!  If not, then perhaps warranty service might replace it for you but don't count on it.  It's time to find a new brick.

  2. The fuse is a safety device that protects the appliance from sudden power surges.  If it was the correct ampage it should have blew 1st so its worth a try.  Just make sure to connect it to convertor.  xx
