My buddy wants to go into the Air Force he has only one kidney. He's twenty years old and he had his kidney surgically removed in second grade. He's perfectly fine and can run and do all the things a normal person can do. Could he even enlist?

  1. Absence of one kidney, congenital or acquired is disqualifying for entry into the armed forces. No waivers are granted.  The source below is the medical standard

  2. nope.  its a PDQ no waivers authorized

  3. Military Medical Standards

  4. Good on him for wishing to serve his country.  If he has no side effects like special diet, can't be vaccinated etc. and doesn't take meds it MAY be possible.  If he has routine treatment he must undergo, and as I mentioned above has some diet restrictions the answer will most certainly be no.

However, he needs to meet with a recruiter to be absolutely sure.

He could still serve as a civilian in DoD, CIA, NSA, NRO, DIA etc.  He shouldn't give up wishing to serve just because the military might be ruled out.
