USA’s Lee Kiefer wins gold medal at Pan American Games in Guadalajara – Fencing Update
The United States’ Lee Kiefer began the first event of the 2011 Pan American Games in Guadalajara with an amazing gold medal victory on Monday, October 24. The World Bronze medallist, Kiefer captured the Women’s Foil Individual event on the first day of
the Pan American Games.
The 17-year-old, Kiefer had already won the bronze medal during 2011 Catania World Fencing Championships in Italy. Moreover, Lee has already won the gold medals in the 2010 Pan American Games in July, 2011 events. In this way, she has captured three straight
gold medals in the Pan American competitions. There was another US female athlete, Nzingha Prescod who ended up with the silver medal in the Women’s Foil Individual contest. Prescod is also Lee’s team-mate for the upcoming Women’s Foil Team contests.
In the final bout, Kiefer dropped Prescod with the score-line of 15-9 and captured the gold medal. Prescod was ranked second in the competition with the silver medal.
Kiefer talked about her final bout against her opponent and said, “Nzingha and I actually end up facing each other quite a bit in international competition. So, even though we don’t train with one another, we really know each other’s styles quite well.”
Prescod said, “I’m really enjoying my Pan American Games experience. The people are so sweet and making this a great time for everyone. Now, I’m looking forward to the team event.”
Kiefer started her bout with the table of 16, where she defeated Chilean, Barbara Garcia and advanced to the quarter-final bout. Right after defeating Barbara, Kiefer faced Mexican, Alely Hernandez in the quarter-final table. The amazing bout of 15-7 points
resulted in a victory for the American superstar and she was then ready to face Nataly Michel in front of a packed crowd. The easy victories against Nataly and Prescod made her the winner of the Women’s Foil Individual contest.
The team of Prescod, Kiefer and a five-time Senior World Team member, Doris Willette will fight in the Team contest of Foil discipline on Thursday, October 27. The US Women’s team is aiming for the gold medal in the team events of 2011 Pan American Games
as well.
