The first decade of the new millennium saw Americans win the Australian Open women’s title for seven out of ten years. Lindsay Davenport began the successful run in 2000, and that was followed by consecutive Australian Open crowns to Jennifer Capriati in 2001-02. Serena Williams won her first Australian Open title in 2003, and won one every other year for the remainder of the decade. Belgian Justine Henin, Frenchwoman Amelie Mauresmo and Russian Maria Sharapova were the only non-American women to win the title at Melbourne Park in the first decade of the 2000s.
