Question:

USB port on the front of HD-DVR?

What is the USB port on the front of my Direct TV HD-DVR for? There is another on the back and I read in the manual that one is for "future use". It says nothing about the port in the front. It would be great if I could use it to transfer recorded video from the DVR to my MacBook & burn DVD's. I wouldn't think they would've put a USB in such a convenient place unless there was a currant purpose for it... Any info would be great. Thanx.

  1. Hi CobMan151,

I think it is there to update the firmware. They told me it was for "future use".

You can copy your video to your computer with DVD Xpress.

DVD Xpress allows you can transfer video to your hard drive and then edit it if you desire. It comes with basic video editing software. I got mine at Sam's for $59.95. They are cheaper now. You can look at one & read about it here - http://www.usb-ware.com/ads-dvd-xpress.h...

I saw a newer model at WalMart recently. It was the DVD Xpress2. I think it was $39.95 but I am not positive.

You connect the composite output of your DVR into the DVD Xpress and connect the DVD Xpress to your computer via a USB cable.

  2. I haven't had Direct in several years but I know what Dish network does with the USB.  With Dish, you can purchase external hard drives and transfer programs to it via the USB port.  Some of my friends that record often use this feature.
