USPS-- forwarding address?

What should I do when I get mail for someone who used to live in my apartment but didn't leave a forwarding address? If I just write FORWARD on it, where will it go?

Place the items back in the mailbox and if youre really nice place a post-it on the items indicating that the items need forwarding.  Sometimes it takes a few days for the regular to realize that a forward exists because the person sent in a forward online without telling the Letter Carrier.  You are also more likely to receive incorrect mail if the regular is off.  If it continues to be a problem call the local post office and ask to talk to the regular Letter Carrier.  Your patience is much appreciated.
