Question:

USPS forwards my mail even though I didn't move?

My sister recently got married & moved out & therefore changed her address with the postal service. Our first names are similar (first 3 letters identical) & this lead to my mail to be forwarded too. I didn't care at first since she would bring me my mail. She moved again & decided to fix the problem by any mail with her maiden name go to my house (her old address, my current) so only her married name would be forwarded. My mail still goes to her (her old address than her new one). I received my credit card bill two days before it was due because of all this forwarding (luckily I pay online). I recently lost my job and am getting unemployment checks (that can't be forwarded). I got a few of them but now the rest seem to be lost, my sister doesn't get them, I don't, the unemployment office sent them and didn't get them back. I went to my post office 3 times to correct this, even talked to the manager. I talked to my carrier who has managed to find some of my mail. What else can I do?

  1. File a change of address  with your name from the address to your present address.   Did you tell the unemployment office to change your address back to your correct address?

I wonder if your sister made the address change a family change.

Good luck, this seems to be a mess.

The checks should be sent back to the unemployment office, they just may not realize they are back yet.

  2. go to your post office and tell them your problem. tell them to look up your sisters change of address and see if she checked family on the form. if so, anyone with that last name, at that address, will be forwarded. tell them to change it to an individual order. unemployment checks will not be forwarded since the unemployment office wants to know where you live, so they are being returned. This will solve all your problems

  3. Your sister needs to file the form that will cancel the forwarding order that is causing the problem. I am not sure what the number is, but her PO will have it. If she just filed an order with her married name, and didn't cancel the one with the maiden name, both will be in effect.

Cancelling the one with the maiden name will solve the problem.

Unemployment Compensation checks are not forwardable. States endorse the envelope "Do Not Forward". Even though they may say that they didn't get them back, they did. USPS will return anything like that, we don't hold mail unless requested in writing. They may not have a record, yet, that they didn't get the checks back, but they did. Tehre is no place else for them to go.

Does your state support Direct Deposit? In my state, it is required or you may opt for a Debit Card type payment, but they do not mauil any checks any more.
