USTA discloses wild card entries for 2011 US Open – Tennis News
The United States Tennis Association has given out eight wild card entries for the 2011 US Open. The wild card entrants are Australian Lleyton Hewitt, Robby Ginepri, Ryan Harrison, Steve Johnson, Jack Sock, world number 89 Donald
Young, French Julien Benneteau and an additional wild card entrant would be the winner of the US Open Wild Card Playoff.
Former world number 1 and the 30-year-old Hewitt was granted his wild card entry through a reciprocal understanding between the Australian and American Tennis Association. This meant that Tennis Australia would award a wild card
entrant designated by USTA in the Australian Open 2012. Benneteau having reached a career-high No. 32 in 2010 is currently ranked No. 112; this year has been a seesaw ride for him with a win-loss record 9-8.
The French Bourg received his wild card entry in the same way as Hewitt but this time the arrangement was made with the French Tennis Association. This year at the French Open Tim Smyczek was the designated wild card entrant by
the USTA.
After undergoing arm surgery last September, the 28 year old, Ginepri has contested in just 6 events since the 2010 US Open and is currently ranked at world number 305. He is a member of the US Davis Cup and the Olympic Tennis
team. He reached his career high ranking of world number 15 in 2005 and has achieved a total of three ATP World Tour singles titles.
The 18 year-old Jack Sock has Won the USTA Boys' eighteens Nationals to earn a wild card into 2010 US Open main draw. As a junior captured 18 USTA National titles and went undefeated in three seasons at high school and captured
three straight Kansas state titles.
The youngest top 100 American player, Ryan Harrison is currently ranked at world number 78 and has had the opportunity t play world class players. He lost to Mardy Fish twice when he reached the semi finals at the Olympus US Open
Series events in Atlanta and Los Angeles. Last year he had managed to reach the main draw of the event where he upset a top seed Ivan Ljubicic but lost in the second round.
The fourth Grand Slam of the year and the most talked about event will take place from August 29th to September the 11th at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, New York.
The US Open has grown from an elite entertainment event to a championship for more than 700 male and female professional players.
The season ending Grand Slam, the US Open has reached a record high of USD 23.7 million as overall base prize money. The title holders of singles events will bag USD 1.8 million in prize money and hence, will be awarded a total
potential payout of USD 2.8 million.
