Question:

UTI or Kidney Infection or Kidney Stones?

My roommate has been having pain in her left side almost in her back area. She also had some blood in her urine, and she is very tired. She says it doesn't burn to urinate. I have tried to get her to go to the ER, but she won't. Does this sound like a UTI or Kidney Infection or could it be Kidney Stones? I am not sure what the different symptoms are for each, but I want her to know how serious it is that she isn't going to the doctor.

  1. She needs to go to the hospital.  It could be very serious.

Kidney stones often cause no pain while they are in the kidneys, but they can cause sudden, severe pain as they travel from the kidneys to the bladder.

Call a doctor right away if you think you have kidney stones. Watch for severe pain in your side, belly, or groin or for urine that looks pink or red. You may also feel sick to your stomach (nausea) and may vomit.

  2. Any time there is blood in the urine, it could be serious. It could be any of the ones you mentioned or maybe a bladder infection. You will have to be persistent about getting her to see the doctor.
