  1. BitTorrent bought uTorrent a while ago and quickly released a new BitTorrent which was actually uTorrent with the BitTorrent name.

So for torrent speed the two are exactly the same.

However, I think that uTorrent is a better choice.  BitTorrent adds a program called DNA to their download.  DNA does nothing for the average user, uses more memory than the bittorrent program itself and is always running, even when BitTorrent is closed down.

Also, just recently there was a "highly critical" security alert put out on both clients.  uTorrent issued an update to fix the security flaw the same day.  BitTorrent still has not issued a fix.

This article discusses both those clients and others and has a setup guide for getting best speeds in uTorrent and the other suggested clients.

  2. Both of them are just a means to get .torrent files to your PC. They both have access to exactly the same files, so viruses are not a factor.  I prefer uTorrent just because it is very small and easy to use, and also quite fast. Honestly they both perform the exact same job I just prefer the small size and ease of use that uTorrent provides.
