I am going to Spain (or Calpe in the Costa Blanca to be more precise) in July and wondering when, during the day, the UV levels are above 3-4?

  1. In the moment, here in Murcia, they are up at 11.

  2. I'm just along the coast from Calpe, and we have at last got summer. It is very hot at midday now, so I am sure UV levels will be high.

I only go to the beach around 4pm and stay till 8pm that way the intense heat has almost gone but it is still great for a tan.

July will be hotter of course, so pack plenty of protection. I use factor 6 but I've been here 17 years and don't sunbathe as such, I take an icebox with plenty of fluids, a sun umbrella for my head at least, and take time to sit under it every now and again. I go in the water fairly often to cool down too. The water is very warm (even for me lol) at the moment. You will love it, look out for little fish that swim in very shallow water in July and August, (they don't hurt you though, they are lovely to see I mean)

Please don't underestimate the sun, as I'm sure you don't, but I see many many tourists who think they are ok for just another half an hour, and then spend the evening in the medical centre for sun stroke or burns and blisters!

Have a great time here on the Costa

  3. yes, are very high. You don't want to stay on the sun without sun cream. Even with sun cream try to wear a T-shirt when you are not in the water and try to use an umbrella when staying on the sand. Defenitely, avoid being outdoors between 2 pm and 4 pm.

  4. Yes. You can check this website for precise information, updated daily.
