Question:

UVB light - tubes vs. vapor bulbs, which is BEST?

What I currently have: 2 beardies, 2 tanks, 2 hoods - each holding incandesent bulbs (1 daylight and one night) and having a basking light (seperate)

What I really need: some sort of UVB light system

Should I keep the setup I have now with the incadesent bulbs and buy vapor bulbs (that emit UVB/UVA) for their basking area, or should I get hoods that hold a UVB tube light and have their basking area seperate? I'm soooo confused. What's the absolute best lighting to get? I've read vapor bulbs emit the best UVB light, but tube lights aren't bad either. I want the absolute best for my babies, so what do ya'll suggest?

  1. tubes are better. vapor bulbs can be hazardous and emit fumes, but tubes are the best kind. You need to get the actual bulb+lamp together costs around $55. The best type of uvb bulb for reptiles in my opinion is Reptosun 5.0 by zoomed. And for the uva bulb, that is a seperate light you also need to get the bulb+lamp for that, together $35.

  2. The absolute best UVB light out there is the Megaray, a Mercury Vapor Bulb.  This does not emit anything dangerous at all.  You can get that online at http://www.reptileuv.com/.  The next best UVB light is also a Mercury Vapor Bulb, this one is called the T-Rex, which you can buy at online retailers and pet shops.  Third is a close tie between the Powersun, A Mercury Vapor Bulb, and two fluorescents, the Arcadia D3 + 12% and the Reptisun 10.0.  And fourth is the Reptiglo 8.0.
